Grampa visit...

Thank you for asking about Grampa... I was getting to that when Kieffer got into that accident...

Long Story Short - Grampa's test results came back - he has bone cancer and prostate cancer - we have decided not to tell him...
I mean whats the point, its not as if he could fight it anyway.
While we were there Marlo said she was having problems getting Grampa to take a shower
[he hadnt showered in 3 days], so Sam took him in the bathroom and made sure he had a good shower...
[that melted my heart- the great circle of life] he came out smelling like Grampa
I will never be able to smell Old Spice on someone and not think of Grampa -

The day before we arrived Candice and my neice Kristina put up a tree for Grampa and decorated his house for Christmas - it looked beautiful.  Marlo said he sat there in front of that tree with all the lights off for half an hour the night before....
We had a very nice visit with him... he says he wants to come to the High Desert house for New Years...  I hope he does... I don't think it will happen...  he doesn't seem to be able to eat real food... mostly chicken broth, soups, and ice cream... [Dr. said let him eat or drink whatever he wants] and he did have a few sips of wine yesterday!

I said "Dad, you have to take a shower okay?"
"Okay...   [pause]    Do we have any wine?" [change the subject and they will forget routine] Sam and I laughed
"Yes, Ill get you a glass but then you have to take a shower okay?"
"Okay"
on the way to the shower, he makes a left into his bedroom and sits down... Sam starts laughing
"Uh... No Dad, Come on... your taking a shower! Nice try tho, your slick, you know that!"
Grampa had a grin on his face... he knew he was busted...
Once he was in the shower Sam said he LOVED it and it felt so good...

During our visit we all took turns laying on the bed with him, or on the couch flipping through old photo albums... One picture had Grampa and some lady Jitterbugging... Grampa says "Boy! She sure was a heffer!"
Everyone busted out laughing... I think he meant hoofer [as in she danced well]

Well anyway... we are going back in a few days to see him again...

as Sam and I were falling asleep last night...
he said "Thank you for being so kind to my father all these years"
"I love your father, Sam"
"I know you do"

Awww... I love you guys too. Glad you all are having nice times with Grampa. I wouldn't tell him either. My mother had so many things wrong before she died and we didn't tell her either. Better to enjoy the last days. I'm glad the girls got up there and did the tree and that he enjoyed it so much.
Take care and Hugs, Chrissie

Kendra,
I'm so sorry to hear about Grandpa......Yes he probably knows something.  Just do what you are doing, and you will all know YOU ALL did your best, to comfort him in his time of need.   This is when you and him need each other.  You are a great person, you have always talked about him like he was YOUR dad.  Gee when we lived there i thought he was your dad!

Keiff, glad to hear your alright.

Kendra i need your address... Gee i know where you live but cant find the numbers to send a Christmas card......

Take Care my friend

I am glad he is eating something & drinking wine!  Maybe he can come for Christmas & New Years; he may surprise you & it would always be a wonderful memory. I love that Sam gave him a shower. I've had many role reversal moments with dad & they sure stay with you. I know you lost your dad young & felt like Sam's dad was yours also. I am certain he felt the same. ~Mary
